Caucasian Rhinoplasty VS. Asian Rhinoplasty
Answers to frequently asked questions about rhinoplasty or nose job in Sydney and Melbourne.
What is Rhinoplasty?
Rhinoplasty, otherwise popularly known as nose job, is a surgical procedure to enhance the shape of the nose. It is done to make the nose larger or smaller, change the angle, remove a bump or indentation or change the tip of the nose (Rohrich and Ahmad, 2011).
Aside from aesthetic reasons, a nose job is also performed to correct a birth deformity or structural problems that cause congestion and breathing problems.
How is rhinoplasty performed?
There are two approaches that can be used in performing rhinoplasty. These are the closed rhinoplasty and the open rhinoplasty. The closed rhinoplasty involves working the shape of the nose via internal incisions through the nostrils. The great advantage of this approach is that it leaves no external scarring, shorter operative time and less swelling in the tip of the nose.
The open rhinoplasty, on the other hand, uses the same approach as that of the closed rhinoplasty with the addition of an incision on the columella. This is the column that separates your nostrils. With the approach, your surgeon can get a better visualization of your nose framework and structure, which allows better precision in tweaking the structure of the nose.
The approach that will be used during your nose job will depend on your expectations and the natural structure of your nose.
When will I see the final result?
After 2 to 3 weeks, you start to see an improvement on your nose as swelling and pain has died down during this time. However, final results will become apparent for at least one year after the procedure has been performed. Recovery and the results will vary from person to person.
What happens if I do not like the result?
There may be cases where the patient is not satisfied with the result. If this happens, a revision rhinoplasty may be performed, but only after 6 months to one year after the first surgery has been done.
That is the reason why a thorough discussion with your surgeon needs to be done to ensure that you understand that a desired outcome will be achieved.
How is Asian rhinoplasty different from Caucasian rhinoplasty?
Asian rhinoplasty uses a different approach compared to that of a Caucasian rhinoplasty mainly because of its general ethnic structure. Most Asian noses are characterized with a lower nasal bridge, wider and flared nostrils and a rounder nasal tip. Aside from that, Asians have a less than angular nose and have thicker skin and fragile cartilage.
Unlike Caucasians, who seek for a reduction of the nose, Asians tend to request a new nose with a thinner and higher bridge, a reduced size of the nostrils and a more projected nose tip. In most cases, a Caucasian rhinoplasty will involve removing excess bones and cartilage from beneath the skin.
For Asians, on the other hand, it involves inserting an implant over the nasal bridge to create extra height to the nose. Also, it may include of the use of septum or ear cartilage to help reshape and strengthen the nasal framework.
Dr. Kim prefers to use a nasal implant, called Goretex (Conrad, Torgerson and Gillman, 2008), and carve it during the procedure to adjust and create a well-balanced proportion to your nose and facial structure. The use of Goretex will allow for a softer and more natural look, as compared to using a silicone implant.
How much does a nose job cost?
The cost of nose surgery starts from AUD$10,000.However, as each person is unique and the procedure needed varies in each individual, the type of nose surgery that you need to have done may have a direct impact on the cost involved.
The best way to understand the total cost involved is to go for free consultation.
Your rhinoplasty procedure will begin with an in-depth and private consultation with a cosmetic surgeon. This is an important part of getting the procedure done, as this the crucial and ideal time to discuss your realistic and attainable expectations for a new nose. This is also an opportunity for you to get to know your surgeon, his past works and success stories.
During the consultation will allow your surgeon to take look into the condition of your existing nose and the approaches that will be done to achieve your desired nose.
Procedure, Pre and Post-Operative Care Tips
After the all the consultation has been done, there are a few preoperative instructions that you may need to follow.
- You may be required to undergo laboratory examinations three weeks prior to your surgery.
- You will also be prohibited from taking medications that contain aspirin and ibuprofen, as well as, supplements that have Vitamin E.
- Also, if you are a smoker, this will be your chance to stop the habit, as you will be advised to refrain from smoking.
- You will be advised to take Vitamin C (Panse et al., 2013) three times a day to help you prepare for a faster healing time.
One week prior to your surgery, you have to refrain from drinking alcohol.
- Fasting will also be required for the anesthesia to take its effect. So, you will be advised not to eat or drink after midnight a day before your surgery.
The Procedure Proper
Your rhinoplasty procedure will be performed under a type of general anesthesia called twilight anesthesia. This means that you will be sedated, but not unconscious, for the entire duration of the procedure and you will feel no pain. The whole procedure will take between 2 to 4 hours to perform.
After The Surgery
Expect that you will experience swelling in your nose. The severity of the swelling will depend on the type of procedure done on your nose. There is usually very little pain, but you may feel a sensation of tightness and pressure in your nose because of the swelling. Generally, your surgeon will prescribe a pain reliever to reduce postoperative pain, if any.
You may also experience profuse nasal bleeding. But this can be addressed by lying down with your head elevated on a pillow or by placing iced washcloths on the back of your neck.
After the entire procedure, you need to follow strict postoperative care to prevent complications from happening. Here are some of the general after care instructions that you may need to follow:
- Avoid strenuous activities, like heavy weight lifting and contact sports, for the first three weeks
- No alcohol intake for the first 3 to 4 weeks after the surgery
- No smoking during the recovery period, as this can delay the healing process
- Take medication as prescribed by the surgeon
- Avoid exposing the nose to the sun
- Avoid blowing your nose for the first week
- Follow treatment instructions
Your surgeon will typically provide you with a list of special instructions that you need to follow.
