CHIN AUGMENTATION FAQ’s

If you are considering about getting a chin augmentation to harmonize the proportions of your facial features, here are answers to the most frequently asked questions about the procedure.

What is a Chin Augmentation?

Chin augmentation, also known as chin surgery or mentoplasty, is a cosmetic procedure that involves the reshaping of the chin by placing an implant or by a reduction surgery of the chin bone.

The procedure can help harmonize and balance the overall facial features and obtain an attractive shape to the face. It is a relatively easy procedure and can create dramatic improvement in the silhouette and profile of a person.

How is chin augmentation performed?

The procedure is performed by inserting an implant, like Silicone and Gore-Tex, to alter the structure and provide a better balance of the facial features. Chin augmentation can be performed using either of two techniques.

The implant can be inserted orally, which involves making a small incision on the inside of the mouth at the intersection of the gum and lower lip. Or it can be inserted externally under the chin along the natural crease line. The implant is then inserted, positioned and secured on to the soft tissues of the chin with sutures or screws. The best approach to be used will be determined by your doctor during your consultation.

What are the benefits of chin augmentation?

Chin augmentation can create a more attractive profile with a more pleasing and triangular shape to the lower face. It can correct an underdeveloped chin or an overdeveloped chin, in the case of chin reduction. Also, getting a chin augmentation can create an illusion of a reduction in the appearance of a double chin.

Who are the right candidates and can it be done simultaneously with other procedures?

The best candidates for chin augmentation are those who have a shorter length between the lower lipline and the chin. The procedure can create a strong chin that project forward as far as the where the lower lips extend and form a long and triangular shape of the face.

A chin augmentation is usually, but not always, performed together with a rhinoplasty procedure. This can help achieve a more proportionate appearance of the facial features and a more natural-looking result without making the new nose stand out too much.

When will I see the final result?

You will be able to see noticeable improvement after two weeks. However, best results will be observed after about one year from the procedure once swelling has completely subsided and healed.

After the chin augmentation surgery, your chin will also be supported with a dressing, chin guard or tape to secure the implant in place for two to three days. It is expected that there will be swelling and bruising on your chin and mouth area. This will gradually go down after a few days. There will also be a slight discomfort especially in sleeping, as well as minimal pain, which can be relieved with pain relievers.

Sutures used to close the incisions will usually dissolve on their own after about three days. It may also be removed by your doctor after three days, together with the removal of the chin support.

Recovery for chin augmentation is relatively short. You can resume to work with caution about one to two weeks after the procedure. This depends on your natural healing process and on the degree of privacy you want to maintain.

Pre-operative Instructions

Since chin augmentation is an invasive surgical procedure, there are several pre-operative instructions that need to be followed prior to the treatment proper. All of these instructions will be discussed during your confidential consultation with your cosmetic surgeon.

This is also the best time for you to discuss with your doctor your realistic expectations and ask questions about the entire procedure. This is when the doctor will make a thorough assessment of your natural facial features and provide you with a picture of what you will look like with a new chin that will harmonize and enhance your features.

  1. You may be required to undergo some laboratory tests and blood work at least two to three weeks prior to your surgery schedule.
  2. You will be advised to stop taking certain medications, like aspirin, ibuprofen, as well as Vitamin E and other blood thinning medicines. These can affect and may result in excessive bleeding during the surgery and lengthen the recovery period.
  3. If you are taking dietary supplements, you will also be advised to stop taking these.
  4. If you are on special medication for a condition or illness, inform your doctor about it, so that he may be able to prescribe an alternative medicine that will not affect your recovery after the procedure.
  5. You will be required to stop smoking or drinking alcoholic beverages at least two weeks prior to the surgery.
  6. You will be asked to take Vitamin C weeks prior to the procedure to promote better healing.
  7. You will be instructed not to eat or drink any fluid after midnight the night prior to your chin augmentation procedure.
  8. While it is not a highly invasive procedure and you can drive on your own, it is best that you arrange with a friend or family member to drive you to your home after the procedure has been performed.

Post-operative Care

As with any other surgical cosmetic procedures, there are postoperative instructions and care that you must follow to ensure proper healing of your new chin.

  1. You will be restricted to a soft diet for a few days after your surgery. This may be in form of oatmeal, yogurt, pasta or soup. However, there are no dietary restrictions post-operatively.
  2. You will be advised to rinse after every time you eat to ensure that the sutures are clean for chin augmentation performed using the oral approach.
  3. Men who will have chin augmentation performed using the external approach will be advised to avoid shaving the incision line for about two weeks after the procedure.
  4. Follow the medication instructions of your doctor. You will be prescribed with medicines for pain, swelling or bruising, which you need to take religiously.
  5. You will need to continue taking Vitamin C to promote faster and better healing.
  6. It is advised to sleep with your head elevated using two to three pillows within two weeks after the procedure.
  7. Refrain from performing strenuous activities for about three weeks.
  8. Smoking and drinking alcoholic beverages are still to be avoided for up to one month after the chin augmentation to ensure proper healing.
  9. Visit your doctor for follow-up check-up and consultation, as instructed. This is an absolute must, as this is the opportunity for your doctor to see the progress and check if any complications may have developed.
