What is ethnic rhinoplasty and how is it any different than the traditional approach?
Ethnic rhinoplasty stemmed from the idea that every nose is different, and even more so, there are certain characteristics that are common to every race. Since there is no certain template that can be used for every patient that comes in, surgeons see to it that the nose they fashion for a patient would suit them perfectly.
Today, you can find that ethnic rhinoplasty has also been frequented by many. But back in the day its goal was to make a patient’s nose more westernized. However this has changed today because patients want to maintain their ethnic noses and go for subtle changes. Let’s just say, they are just looking for some minor tweaks.
If you have noticed, there is actually a huge difference between the noses of the different ethnic groups. And when you look closely, there are even more particular variations for those within the same ethnic groups.
This goes to show that rhinoplasty should be customized otherwise; the nose would end up looking awkward on the patient’s face.
African American Rhinoplasty
This term is actually a broad one because it there are a numerous detailed anatomic descriptions and anthropometric studies which shows the wide variations for this group. Most African American patients who get rhinoplasty request for their noses to become narrower with a more defined tip and a narrow bridge.
Usually, surgeons would use more grafts for these cases because African Americans tend to have thicker skin and thinner cartilages in their nose. These grafts are places on the nasal tip, bridge or the base of the nose creating a more natural result which at the same time retain their ethnicity.
Since Asian noses take a wider and flatter appearance what surgeons often do is to increase the projection of the nose. This can be achieved by inserting grafts or implants which are often positioned at the bridge of the nose but leaving the tip off. This is to maintain that natural Asian characteristic of the nose.
Asian patients also often ask for the narrowing of the nostrils. The surgeon can alter this by either breaking some bone and reset it to make it appear narrower. This method can also create more projection even without the use of implants.
The nasal tip can also be increased or enhanced by using natural tissue which is removed from the nasal septum in place of artificial implants. This is much preferred by surgeons because it eliminates the risk of rejection.
Middle Eastern and Mediterranean Nose
What characterizes this type of nose is that it has a strong profile with a high angulation. But if analyzed further, there are still numerous variations within the group. But they generally have an overall large nose that is often characterized by a straight bridge or a large hump. They also have a large tip due to the heavy and thick skin.
Overall, the goal of the surgery should be that it is able to create a more natural-looking result. The nose should be fashioned to be harmonious with other features of the face and not standout. For this, it is important that one look for a cosmetic surgeon who has ample experience on performing this specific type of rhinoplasty.
Rhinoplasty surgeon should have the skill in using the special techniques that would suit accordingly. The goal with ethnic rhinoplasty is to refine without eliminating the traits of one’s ethnicity.
